FAQ
What does a treadwear rating of 400–499 mean?
Treadwear is the maker's rating of wear against the government's control tire, which is graded 100; a grade of 200 means the tire is rated to wear twice as slowly on the test course. For 400–499 that works out to 4 to just under 5 times as slowly (our arithmetic). It is not a mileage figure and varies with driving, vehicle and maintenance.
How many tire lines have treadwear 400–499?
769 lines in the NHTSA file we downloaded on 2026-10-25, by median grade. That is 25.5% of 3,020 rated lines.
Which brand has the most lines in the 400–499 band?
Hankook (47 lines), followed by Bridgestone (42). Counting lines is not a ranking of quality or popularity.
